The Malaga airport ( Aeropuerto de San Julian ) is currently ranked 4th in Spain handling 12.823.125 passengers and 107.397 flight operations in 2011 and increase of 6.3% on the previous year.

It is easy to understand why this airport is so busy at it feeds the whole of the Costa del Sol and although it had a major facelift only some 10 years ago to improve the overall facilities the increased growth of air passenger traffic over the last 10 years has probably taken most people by surprise not least the city planners. However 41 Million Euros have now been set aside to improve the infrastructure so there is quite a lot of building going on around the area so please take this into account when planning your return trip.

Arrivals: The arrivales can only be accesses thorugh terminal 3 ( T3) . The baggage reclaim hall is located in T3and has 11 baggage reclaim carrousels (9 for European Union flights and 2 for non-European Union flights) and 1 for special baggage. The hall in T2 has 10 baggage reclaim carousels.

Departures:
At the same level as the departures area bridges connect the airport to the airport car parks and the new impressive railway station with its new link to central Malaga is located just over the metal bridge and is easily accessed from the main airport terminals.

Departures are divided between T2 and T3. There are currently 80 check-in desks which keep waiting times to a minimum and 56 boarding gates. You will also find a reasonable selection of shops and cafeterias on the first floor and around the boarding gates on the ground floors.

The airport has three boarding docks. Dock B for non-European Union non-Schengen traffic. Dock C for European Union non-Schengen traffic and the new dock D for Schengen traffic (both European Union and non-European Union ). The 4 boarding gates located at the end of Dock D may be used, when necessary, for non-Schengen traffic.

Catering / Shopping: After a major expansion project the third terminal is now open and includes one of the most impressive shopping centres located within an airport in Spain. The commercial area of 6.000 square metres is set aside for cafeterias, bars and restaurants with another 2.800 square metres dedicated to shopping areas. The commercial zone includes some of the most prestigious names in the business such as Adolfo Domiguez, Adidas, Cottet and Swarovski. Travellers passing though the new terminal can choose from gourmet fine dining to the fast food outlets such as Starbucks or Burger King.
